| Suzuki's Crosscage - Hybrid Motorcycle | With more and more car developers making hybrid and electric cars, Suzuki is exploring the concept of hybrid motorcycles with their crosscage, a fuel cell powered bike with a unique engine and body design.
Crosscage's air cooled fuel cell designed by British company Intelligent Energy helps slim down this design by eliminating the need for a radiator or coolant system. Located just above the hydrogen fuel tank, the fuel cell is very compact, light, and powerful. It sends power to the motor controller which stores it in the lithium ion battery or sends it to the motor. Through combining oxygen in the air and hydrogen from the fuel tank to create power this motorcycle's exhaust is only water vapor thus helping reduce CO2 emissions and protect the environment. On a single tank of hydrogen the crosscage can travel about 200km and has the power equivalent of 125ccs.
The crosscage from which the motorcycle gets its name is not merely an aesthetic choice but also protects the hydrogen fuel tank which is located directly behind the intersecting point. There is also a sensor at the top of the chassis which constantly checks for hydrogen leaks and shuts off the fuel tank if there are any abnormalities.

motorcycle that utilizes cells that were initially designed for mining
equipment. As a result of this collaboration, Advanced Battery Technologies,
Inc. and
Wuxi Angell have obtained the necessary CE markings to start marketing Wuxi's
motorcycle worldwide. As one of its major contributions to this product
development initiative Advanced Battery Technologies, Inc. solved key issues
such as
low volume capacity, impractical size, undesirable weight. Advanced Battery
Technologies, Inc. develops, manufactures, and distributes rechargeable polymer
lithium-ion battery cells for use in electric vehicles, mining equipment and a
variety of many other consumer electronics.
This hybrid motorcycle is expected to be exported to Germany, Italy, France,
Spain and other European countries sometime in 2008. The motor component has
already passed all necessary tests of Wuxi's German importer, A.T.U. In addition
to
that they have received a TUeV certificate, which is required in Germany to
validate the safety of a specific product for humans and the environment. A
letter of intent has also been signed with key dealers in Miami, Houston,
Detroit and LA, with the expectation of this hybrid motorcycle gradually
becoming available in the U.S. in 2008.

| US Patent 6158543 - Motorcycle with hybrid drive system | The present invention relates generally to a motorcycle and more particularly to a hybrid motorcycle including an electric motor in addition to an engine. Vehicles of the type using a gasoline engine as a drive source are chiefly available at present. However, vehicles of the type using an electric motor as a drive source are required at locations where the occurrence of an exhaust gas must be avoided. A motor-driven vehicle, however, has an inconvenience in that it has an increased body weight and a shortened running distance. To cope with such an inconvenience, there is an increased demand that a hybrid vehicle including an electric motor in addition to an engine be developed.
